MLB insider predicts how much it will cost to sign Mets’ Edwin Diaz

A hot commodity is hitting the free agent market soon.

His name is Edwin Diaz, and he will be able to talk to any team five days after the World Series ends. That is, if the Mets don’t re-sign him first.

Here’s what SNY’s Andy Martino thinks he will be worth:

“You’re looking at $20-25 million a year, he’s certainly within his rights to ask for five years. So I’m going to go with five years, $110 million. That’s the number.”

This year, the closer made $10.2 million with the Mets. And he got hot.

He posted a career-best 1.31 ERA in 62 innings pitched with 32 saves. General manager Billy Eppler went on the New York Post’s Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman’s podcast The Show and said Diaz knows how the club feels about him: “Edwin was nothing short of fantastic this season and it was very comforting to watch him come into a game … Would we like to have him back? Absolutely. Are we going to be able to get something worked out? Potentially.”

Re-signing Diaz will be a priority for the Mets, Martino reports: The Mets are prioritizing (Edwin) Diaz and Brandon Nimmo above all other internal free agents, and expect to maintain open and consistent communication with Diaz once free agency begins the morning after the conclusion of the World Series.
