MLB fans smiling creepily was a marketing ploy

  • by

You may have seen some creepy smiling fans behind home plate at some recent Major League Baseball games…ones who don’t seem to move and won’t stop smiling for a while.

Some of those fans went viral recently, and now we know the reason why: They’re part of a movie promotion.

The horror movie Smile — starring Sosie Bacon and Jessie T. Usher and directed and written by Parker Finn — came out, and it turns out that was some very viral marketing for the flick.

Seriously. All that creeping us out was to promote a movie. well played Smile marketers. Let’s take a look back:

Here were the fans

Yes, those were actors

From Sports Illustrated:

If you were watching a baseball game last night, you might’ve noticed someone behind home plate who couldn’t stop smiling in a very creepy fashion. As it turns out, that was not a coincidence.

The two fans who attended the Red Sox-Yankees, Mets-Athletics and Cardinals-Dodgers games on Friday night were actors promoting Smilea horror movie that apparently features villains with a bunch of very creepy smiles.

GAH!
