MLB Draft 2023: Yankees land another shortstop prospect in latest 1st-round mock

  • by

You can never have too many middle infielders.

That seems to be the approach the New York Yankees are taking when it comes to stocking their farm system.

Both Anthony Volpe, the Yankees’ top prospect and No. 5 overall according to MLB Pipeline, and Oswald Peraza, the Yankees’ No. 3 prospects, are knocking on the door of the big leagues.

Yet according to the latest first-round mock for the 2023 MLB Draft, the Yankees are set to select another shortstop, using the No. 26 pick on Georgia high school prospect Colin Houck.

Houck is a strong and physical shortstop who is also a quarterback standout at a powerhouse Parkview program that produced big leaguers like Matt Olson. The Yankees have taken a hitter with their first pick in six of the last seven Drafts, and two were high schoolers, led by top prospect Anthony Volpe.

Earlier this month, MLB held its first draft lottery to determine who will have the No. 1 pick overall. That went to the Pittsburgh Pirates, followed by the Washington Nationals, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Oakland A’s.

The Pirates and Nationals were two of the three teams with the highest percentage chance (16.5% each) to get the No. 1 overall pick, along with the A’s, by virtue of having the three worst records in 2022.
