Much like the baseball Jeremy Pena hit in the fourth inning of last night’s World Series game, the idea of wearing masks should be long gone.
But Major League Baseball disagrees. It has a peculiar set of postseason rules that apply only to members of the media. All journalists must wear masks when entering any team’s clubhouse. This mandate did not apply to players, however. Apparently, only the media spread COVID-19.
TWITTER’S ‘IT TAKES TIME TO COUNT THE VOTES’ PROPAGANDA
This inconsistency is just one of many frustrating, baffling masking rules in place since 2020.
Consider the conditions to enter team clubhouses. The guidelines state: “Throughout the 2022 Postseason, media members are required to be fully up-to-date with their vaccination status, including booster shots, in order to enter a clubhouse. In addition, such media members must wear masks at all times while in the clubhouse and in Interview Rooms.”
Admittedly, these rules were not strictly enforced, as many did not wear them at all. And while some complied, others wore masks beneath their noses or chins. But to require masks in the first place was pointless. It’s bureaucratic absurdity with no legitimate purpose, indicative of the utter nonsense over wearing masks that has bizarrely become an issue of nationwide cultural division.
Over two years after the COVID-19 pandemic began and months after nearly all mask mandates in the country were dropped, it is illogical for MLB to have these rules. Moreover, if these rules are in place to mitigate any spread, what is the point of having them if only the media have to wear them? If we are still “trusting the science,” then players and the press should be mandated to wear masks, or perhaps neither of them should be.
Furthermore, what is the point of having such rules if they are not enforced? At the National League Championship Games and World Series games in Philadelphia, not one from MLB asks anyone attending for any proof of vaccination. As for wearing masks, all one has to do is look at videos of interviews with players in the clubhouse to see the lack of compliance.

Like many mask mandates throughout the country, MLB’s rules accomplish nothing and exist only for public relations purposes. There is no legitimate reason for the mask requirement in the clubhouse — especially if it only applies to the media. Protecting people’s health is one thing, nonsensical and illogical rules about masks, especially in November 2022, are another.
