It’s tournament time in Portage County and golfers can be found on the links daily.

After the July 4 holiday, junior golfers filled the fairways at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna for one leg of the 36-hole Northern Ohio PGA series.

The intense heat did not deter the golfers, ages 11 to 19, from competing hard for the 36-hole NOPGA Junior Series Championship on the par-70 fairways of Windmill Lakes.

Mitchell Tyger of Kent earned a top-10 finish, firing 73-76 for the solid two-day total of 9 over. Liam Curtis, also of Kent, was just one stroke behind at 10 over.

Max Devins of Aurora edged into the top 20 with a 12 over, staying consistent with 18-hole rounds of 75 and 77.

On the girls side, Aurora’s Grace Vidovic tied for third place at 12 over for ages 11-19.

A Mineo family affair at Windmill Lakes

It was a family affair at the NOPGA tourney at Windmill for the Mineo family of Kent.

Isabella Mineo, competing for the John Carroll University women’s golf team, is spending her summer as an intern for the Northern Ohio PGA. Her roster of duties included serving as a starter on the first tee at Windmill Lakes for the junior tournament. She will be a junior at John Carroll this fall, studying marketing/supply chain management.

Isabella’s sister, Adrianna, competed in the 36-hole tournament. She is spending her summer participating in various events before returning to the Kent Roosevelt varsity girls golf team this fall.

And, like many supportive parents of junior golfers, Amy Mineo followed her daughter on the links, walking the 18 holes. For parents, it doesn’t get much better than spending the day watching the talented junior golfers on the fairways throughout the summer.
