Minnesota Crookston Men’s, Women’s Golf Make History – Crookston Times

The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s golf placed second out of 11 teams at the Bemidji State University Invitational with rounds of 294 and 293, while the women’s golf team placed fourth out of nine teams at the Tracy Lane Memorial at Bemidji Town and Country Club in Bemidji , Mine.

Men’s Golf The men’s round tied for fourth and sixth for the best in the program since 2009. Devin Kucy (So., Camrose, Alberta) finished tied for second after shooting rounds of 67 and 72. The placing is the best in a tournament for the Golden Eagles since Seth Heppner tied for third at the Bemidji State Invitational when it was a four-team event on September 13-14, 2015.

Keegan Poppenberg (Sr., Esko, Minn.) had a great second day with a 69 to go with his first round 73 to finish tied for fifth for his best placing in his career. Layton Bartley (So., Fargo, ND) shot rounds of 77 and 74. Rory Wutzke (So., Camrose, Alberta) shot rounds of 79 and 78. Ethan Howes (Fr., Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta) carded rounds of 77 and 84.

Individually, Carson Shultis (Fr., Fargo, ND) shot rounds of 81 and 77. Cade Pederson (Sr., West Fargo, ND) put up rounds of 76 and 82, while Matt Moroz (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta) shot rounds of 90 and 83.

Kucy had birdies on hole three and 13 Tuesday. Poppenberg had birdies on four, 12, 16, and 18.

The second-place team finish for Minnesota Crookston marks the best finish for the Golden Eagles since the 2011-12 team. The Golden Eagles won a dual at the Bob Writz Invitational in April of 2012. They took third out of nine teams at the Concordia Invite in September 2011.

Minnesota Crookston upended Winona State University and Minnesota State University-Mankato by two strokes. They also defeated Concordia College, Bemidji State University’s two teams, Augustana University, the second team for Concordia-St. Paul, Minot State University, and University of Mary.

The Golden Eagles will look to build on a great start to the 2022-23 season at the Watkins Invite in Lake City, Minn. Sunday, September 25-Tuesday, September 27.

Women’s Golf The Lady Golden Eagles shot a 338 on Tuesday for the best single round in school history, defeating the previous best mark set March 10, 2016 at the SMSU Spring Invite. The two-round score of 683 takes down the best two-round score by the Golden Eagles in program history previously set at the 2016 SMSU Spring Invite with a 704.

Minnesota Crookston’s fourth place finish is the best finish in an event with more than six teams in school history. Anaka Lysne (Fr., Wahpeton, ND) placed sixth with rounds of 79 and 81. Lysne had the best individual finish since Ashlee Humble won a triangular with MSU Moorhead and Concordia College April 27, 2018. Prior to that, the last Top 10 finish by a Golden Eagle was by Katie Sheetz at the SMSU Spring Invite March 9-10, 2016.

Abby Stender (R-Sr., Madison, Minn.) placed tied for 14th after rounds of 87 and 80. Clara Hanson (So., Grand Forks, ND) shot rounds of 89 and 86. Lauren Bowyer (Fr., Ivanhoe, Minn.) carded rounds of 90 and 91. Tiffany Kozojed (Jr., Hillsboro, ND) shot rounds of 97 and 93.

Individually, Denali Johnson (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) had rounds of 98 and 94, while Ciera Kotaska (Jr., Thief River Falls, Minn.) had a 117 in the first round Monday.

The Golden Eagles defeated the University of Mary, Bemidji State University, Minot State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and Concordia College Moorhead. Minnesota State was the team champion with rounds of 315 and 326. Molly Albrecht was the individual champion with rounds of 77 and 75.
