Minisforum is expanding the Venus mini PC lineup with the UM690 model that comes powered by the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor integrating a Radeon 680M GPU. This is also among the first AMD-based commercial devices to feature USB4 connectivity.
Sporting AMD’s currently most powerful mobile processor with 8 cores and 16 threads clocked at a maximum of 4.9 GHz, the UM690 also comes with an improved cooling system combining liquid metal and smart fans for reduced noise levels. The integrated iGPU is based on the RDNA2 architecture and packs 12 CUs running at up to 2.4 GHz. Additionally, there is support for up to 64 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, along with an M.2 PCIe 4.0 slot for NVMe SSDs and a 2.5-inch bay for SATA III drives.
Thanks to the inclusion of the USB4 port, there is no need for fancy mods that allow for desktop-grade GPUs to be connected to the compact mini PCs. With USB4, users can easily connect a powerful external GPU box, or, alternatively, the connector can be used to hook the mini PC up to an 8K @ 60 Hz screen.
Other ports include 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with data transfer mode, 4x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, 2x HDMI video outputs (in addition to USB4 DP mode), audio combo jack and 2.5 GbE jack. Size-wise, this model appears to be similar to the UM590 that measures 12.66 x 12.8 x 4.65 cm.

I first stepped into the wondrous IT&C world when I was around seven years old. I was instantly fascinated by computerized graphics, whether they were from games or 3D applications like 3D Max. I’m also an avid reader of science fiction, an astrophysics aficionado, and a crypto geek. I started writing PC-related articles for Softpedia and a few blogs back in 2006. I joined the Notebookcheck team in the summer of 2017 and am currently a senior tech writer mostly covering processor, GPU, and laptop news.
