Some items from sports history are simply priceless, but that’s not going to stop bidders from paying a hefty price for one of the most iconic pieces of Michael Jordan memorabilia in existence.
A jersey worn by the former Chicago Bulls great during the 1998 NBA Finals is up for auction, and the bidding on the famous piece of memorabilia is expected to reach up to $5 million on the auction block.
The Jordan jersey is from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals when the Utah Jazz defeated the Chicago Bulls 88-85. While Jordan wore the jersey in a loss, it’s particularly rare. The jersey will be one of only two Jordan jerseys worn in a finals game to ever appear at auction, according to auction house Sotheby’s, which calls it “one of the most significant items from Michael Jordan’s career.”
“The season itself is his ‘magnum opus’ as an athlete, and a testament to him as a champion and competitor. Finals jerseys from Jordan are remarkably scarce, and the 1997-1998 Finals are arguably the most coveted of them all,” Brahm Wachter of Sotheby’s said in a press release obtained by CNN.
Even though he wore the jersey in a loss, Jordan was still at his best. The legendary guard led all scorers with 33 points in 45 minutes before the Bulls lost in overtime.
Bidding on the iconic jersey will begin on September 6 and will be open until September 14.
