Who is starting for the Mets?

Justin Verlander makes the start in the Subway Series opener tonight for the Mets.

The veteran right-hander is coming off a tremendous effort his last time out. He allowed just one run, via a Luis Robert homer, on three hits while striking out seven over eight strong innings. It marked just the second time he’s pitched into the eighth this season.

After a bit of a rough patch early on, Verlander seems to have found his footing in New York. He’s posted a strong 1.74 ERA and 1.06 WHIP while striking out 26 batters over his last five starts.

On the year, he now has a 3.47 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 70 strikeouts through 14 outings.

When he faced the Yankees at Citi Field earlier this season, Verlander allowed just one run and three hits while striking out six in six innings. He’ll look to find that same success tonight in the Bronx.

Who is starting for the Yankees?

Verlander and the Mets will be opposed by Domingo German in this one.

The 30-year-old right-hander has had a bit of an up-and-down 2023 campaign for the Bombers. Over 18 starts, six of which are quality starts, he posted a 4.51 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 101 strikeouts.

His last time out, German was unable to contain the Angels offense. He allowed just four hits, but two of them went for extra-bases, and LA was able to strike for five runs over six innings of work.

German was able to record nine strikeouts on the night, a mark he’s hit in three of his last four starts.

He wasn’t lined up to face the Mets in the two games at Citi earlier this season, but in five career starts against them, German’s posted a strong 3.71 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and Yankees close out this quick two-game set and this years installment of the Subway Series on Wednesday at 7:05 pm on SNY.

Jose Quintana (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will make his second start as a Met after a strong debut, and he’ll be opposed by Carlos Rodon (0-3, 7.36 ERA), who has struggled over his first three starts back from the IL.
