Mets should have real concerns about Kodai Senga, MLB insider says

  • by

New York Mets general manager Billy Eppler has been diligent about adding starting pitching this offseason.

He’s been busy, signing Justin Verlander (two years, $86.67 million), Jose Quintana (two years, $26 million) and Kodai Senga (five years, $75 million) to upgrade the starting rotation.

But the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier brings up a reason for a break with Senga. He reports that Senga’s contract was seen as “falling potentially below expectations,” due to his 8.6% walk rate in 2022 suggesting inconsistent control. Speier also reports that there are medical concerns.

But the Mets and owner Steve Cohen can afford this sort of risk for the huge reward that Senga could turn out to be. The 29-year-old is coming off of an 11-6 season with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball, posting a 1.94 ERA.

Senga spent the last 11 years in the NPB and is a three time All-Star. He also won six Japan Series titles and is a two-time Mitsui Golden Glove Award Winner.
