Who is starting for the Mets?
Kodai Senga gets the ball in his 12th start of his debut season with the Mets.
Senga is coming off a rough go his last time out on Sunday, his first career start on four days rest. His velocity and spin rate were down from his season average on each of his pitches and he allowed four runs (3 earned) on four hits with five walks and three strikeouts over 2.2 innings. He threw only 34 strikes on 68 pitches to 16 Toronto batters.
Overall, the Japanese right-hander has been effective this season, allowing 25 runs (24 earned) on 47 hits in 57.2 innings pitched good for a 3.75 ERA (4.20 FIP). He has walked 36 batters but struck out 73. Senga has pitched to a 1.439 WHIP and been dinged for seven long balls.
The issue for Mets fans today, Senga has allowed 17 runs in 25 innings over five starts away from Citi Field (6.12 ERA), compared to 8 runs (7 earned) in 32.2 innings over six starts at home (1.93 ERA).
Who is starting for the Pirates?
Right-hander Johan Oviedo takes the mound for a 33-29 Pittsburgh side currently tied for first place in the NL Central.
After a rough stretch in late April, Oviedo has settled down to string together four solid outings out of his last five. On Monday, he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits over seven innings of work in a win over Oakland. He added five strikeouts to go with his two walks and two hit batters.
In 12 starts so far this campaign, the righty has surrendered 35 runs (31 earned) on 64 hits over 65 innings pitched, good for a 4.29 ERA (4.06 FIP). He has walked 32 batters and struck out 58 and allowed just five homers. Oviedo has pitched to a 1.477 WHIP, up from 1.286 in 56 innings last season.
