Mets’ Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso still in the hunt to start in 2023 MLB All-Star Game

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor (12) is greeted by first baseman Pete Alonso (20) after hitting a home run against the Philadelphia Phillies during the fourth inning at Citi Field.

Major League Baseball revealed an updated look at the 2023 All-Star Game balloting, and a few Mets remain in the mix to be starters.

With Phase 1 of fan voting ending on Thursday at noon Eastern Time, Francisco Lindor (508,168) remains in second place at shortstop for the National League, behind Atlanta’s Orlando Arcia (1,060,559).

If Lindor (who is roughly 85,000 votes ahead of San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts) remains in second place when Phase 1 ends, he and Arcia will then go head-to-head in Phase 2 voting (June 26-29) to determine which player gets the start at shortstop.

Meanwhile, Pete Alonso (633,498) is in third place at first base, but he’s only about 5,000 votes behind Atlanta’s Matt Olson for second place. Los Angeles’ Freddie Freeman (1,649,166) appears to be a lock to make Phase 2.

Elsewhere for the Mets, Jeff McNeil ranks seventh at second base, Francisco Alvarez ranks fourth at catcher, Brett Baty is seventh at third, and Brandon Nimmo is the only Met in the top 20 of outfield voting, coming in at No. 16.

If Lindor and/or Alonso were to reach Phase 2 of voting, that doesn’t guarantee they will make the NL squad. Once the starters are chosen via the fan vote, the reserves are later chosen by the coaching staff, although fan voting does provide some input.
