Late Thursday night, a source told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo that the Mets plan to promote the catching prospect before Friday’s series opener against the Atlanta Braves. The club has not yet confirmed the move.

Alvares is MLB’s top prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. This year, between Double-A Bingham and Triple-A Syracuse, he batted .260/.374/.511 with 27 home runs.

MLB.com and ESPN both report that Alvarez could offer a needed DH solution to the Mets.

The pressure will be on for the 20-year-old who will be joining the team at a crucial time. This weekend’s series against the Braves in Atlanta will serve as a battle for the division. New York reclaimed its grip on first place in the NL East on Wednesday with a 5-4 walk-off win over the Miami Marlins. The Braves lost to the Washington Nationals, 3-2, Wednesday, giving the Mets a one-game lead. This will be the most important series of the year.
