Men’s Soccer Welcomes Siena And Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE RI – The Providence College men’s soccer team is set to host Siena on Sept. 2 and intra-state rival Rhode Island on Sept. 5 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, RI

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… The Friars are looking to earn their first win after starting their 2022 campaign 0-1-1 with a loss to Colgate (3-2) and a draw to Fordham (0-0). Nick Benjamin (Stonington, Conn.) and Thomas Tulgar (Bergenfield, NJ) each scored against Colgate in the Friars’ season opener on Thursday, Aug. 25 in Providence, RI In the Friars draw against Fordham (Aug. 28), goalkeeper Lucas Burns (Cinnaminson, NJ) made a season high five saves to earn his first shutout of the season.

FRIARS IN 2021…Providence finished the 2021 campaign with a 12-5-4 overall record, including a 5-2-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars qualified for their 20thth BIG EAST Tournament, claiming the No. 2 seed and earning a bye into the semifinals. The Friars’ postseason run continued in the NCAA Tournament for the 11th timeth time in program history, as the squad advanced to the Third Round.

FRIARS PICKED FIRST IN BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL…
The BIG EAST Conference announced its 2022 Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The Friars were picked to finish first in the BIG EAST with Ramzi Qawasmy, Luis Garcia and Gevork Diarbian earning selections for the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Qawasmy was also selected as a Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, Qawasmy, Garcia and Diarbian landed spots on the United Soccer Coaches Players to Watch Lists for Defenders, Midfielders and Forwards, respectively.

The Friars earned four All-BIG EAST selections in 2021. Ramzi Qawasmy earned All-BIG EAST First Team. Two Friars earned All-BIG EAST Second Team-senior Luis Garcia and junior Gevork Diarbian. Leading scorer, Brendan McSorley earned BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors. All four Friars will be returning for the 2022 season.

NEWCOMERS…The Friars have added eight incoming freshmen and one transfer for the upcoming season. The freshmen include, Tomas Magnusson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland), Mario Vazquez Pina (A Coruna, Spain), Mitchell Varley (Portsmouth, New Hampshire), Jaden Perryman (Ports-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), Sam Montalto (Stonington, Conn.), Brian Lopez (Hialeah, Fla.), Landon Cartwright (Old Greenwich, Conn.), and Owen VanMarter (Hilton Head Island, SC). Graduate transfer Nick Benjamin (Stonington, Conn.) joins the Friars after four seasons with the University of Hartford.

2022 will mark the programs’ first all-time meeting.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS…Siena began its 2022 campaign with a 2-0 overall record with wins over Sacred Heart (1-0) and UMass Lowell (2-1).

In 2021, Siena finished the season with an overall record of 9-7-3. The Saints were picked fifth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing in fourth place at the end of the 2021 season. Midfielders Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen and Erik Reis, along with defender Henrik Winkelmann earned Preseason All-MAAC honors.

SCOUTING THE RAMS… Rhode Island has posted a 1-0-1 record to begin its 2022 campaign playing two nationally ranked teams at the time. The Rams tied #21 Penn State (1-1) in their season opener (Aug. 25) and shutout #8 Hofstra (2-0) on the road on Aug. 29. Rhode Island will face UMass Lowell on Friday, Sept. 2 in its home opener in Kingston, RI before traveling upstate to Providence, RI for its battle against the Friars.

The Rams concluded their 2021 season with a 10-5-2 overall record and were chosen to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Forward Patrick Agyemang, midfielder Edvin Akselsen and defender Zach Drayer were named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
