Men’s Soccer Hosts USC Upstate, Mount Olive To Open Exhibition Play

CHAPEL HILL The University of North Carolina men’s soccer team will have back-to-back matches at home to open exhibition play, first hosting USC Upstate on Sunday, Aug. 14 before welcoming Mount Olive to Dorrance Field on Monday, Aug. 15.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm ET and admission is free for both contests. Live stats will not be available.

The Tar Heels then close out their three-game exhibition slate by traveling to Harrisonburg, Va. to square off with James Madison on Friday, Aug. 19 for a 7 pm tilt at Sentara Park.

Following its three preseason tests, UNC returns home to officially begin 2022 regular season action with the Carolina Nike Classic, taking on Air Force on Aug. 25 and South Florida on Aug. 27.

UNC has a competitive schedule this season and will face six teams that finished in the top 20 of the final United Soccer Coaches poll last year, highlighted by a matchup with defending national champion Clemson. In addition to the Tigers, UNC’s opponents include one third round, two second round, one quarterfinal and one semifinal team from the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

With head coach Carlos Somoano now in his 12th year at the helm, UNC returned 22 players and added 12 freshmen and six transfers for the 2022 season. The Tar Heels were recently slotted at No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll.

North Carolina produced an 11-7-2 (4-4 ACC) record last season, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels finished fourth in the ACC Coastal Division and had five All-ACC selections.
