Men’s Soccer Draws with William & Mary, 2-2

WASHINGTON – GW men’s soccer opened up its campaign on Thursday afternoon with an entertaining clash against visiting William & Mary, ultimately ending in a 2-2 draw.

The Buff & Blue held a pair of one-goal advantages but saw the Tribe respond twice in the second half to walk away with a point each.

HOW IT HAPPENED

– 41st minute: Oscar Haynes Brownthe team’s leading goal scorer from a year ago, got the Colonials started with a tremendous individual play, curling a ball along the turf from the top of the box into the far post for a 1-0 lead.
– 63rd minute: The Tribe’s Diba Nwegbo leveled the match, burying a second chance rebound off a corner past GW’s Justin Grady.
– 71st minute: GW struck back eight minutes later Tom Cooklinafter having his initial shot blocked, hammered a volley from the top of the box off a perfect assist from Nico Krueger.
– 84th minute: Nwegbo struck again for W&M, putting a low cross on a feed from Lucas Caldas.

NOTEWORTHY

– Haynes Brown scored the 32nd goal of his illustrious career, moving him into a tie for sixth-most all-time with Steve Masten (1992-95).

– Cooklin’s marker was his fifth career goal, and first since September 28, 2021 vs. James Madison.

– Krueger’s helper was the first of his career after scoring a goal in 12 appearances last season.

– The even affair saw the Tribe holding an edge in total shots (10-9), but matching totals in shots on goal (4-4), corner kicks (6-6) and yellow cards (3-3).

– GW has earned at least a point in four straight season openers, going 3-0-1 in the span.
