Maybe Kendric Davis will stick around in Memphis a little longer.
The former Memphis basketball point guard had a pre-draft workout with the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, he confirmed to The Commercial Appeal.
Davis, who averaged 21.9 points and 5.4 assists in his lone year playing for coach Penny Hardaway, is a potential second-round pick and two-way contract candidate. He is drawing pro comparisons to Ty Lawson and DJ Augustin, someone who could serve as the backup guard in the league.
Aside from the Grizzlies, Davis has already worked out with the Golden State Warriors, the Indiana Pacers, the Dallas Mavericks, the Houston Rockets and participated in the NBA Draft Combine scrimmages.
Memphis basketball has had a player drafted into the NBA in two of Hardaway’s previous four drafts as a coach.
How Davis would fit on the Grizzlies is uncertain given the roster situation in Memphis this offseason. The Grizzlies drafted another point guard with a Memphis connection last year — Kennedy Chandler — only to release him in April when faced with an injury-related roster crunch.
Davis has a close relationship with Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane dating to a year spent together at TCU. It would make for an interesting dynamic.
