Melbourne’s AAMI Park will throw open its doors for football fans as one of three live sites in the Victorian capital for the Socceroos’ blockbuster clash with Argentina on Sunday morning (Australian time).
The Victorian government on Saturday announced the World Cup round-of-16 clash will be screened at three live sites across Melbourne.
The game will once again be screened at Fed Square, which has hosted thousands of fanatics during the Socceroos’ first three games of the World Cup.
Premier Dan Andrews on Saturday announced that AAMI Park will be open from 5am, entry will be free and punters will be able to watch on the big screen from the grandstands.
The game will also be beamed into the Victoria Golf Club at Cheltenham before play begins at the Australian Open later that morning.
The clash with Argentina, to determine which team will take their place in the quarterfinals, will be played on the course’s village big screen.
The first 500 people through the gate will enter free of charge and will be allowed to stay for the Australian Open later that day.
“This Sunday will see thousands of football fans again descend on Melbourne’s CBD, so we’re making more live sites available for football fans to watch the Socceroos’ historic World Cup match against Argentina,” Mr Andrews said.
“This is Australia’s best-ever World Cup performance, and we’re making sure as many people as possible can enjoy the action and cheer on our side as it takes the field in Qatar.”
Live sites have been opened up in cities across Australia as the Socceroos stormed into the knockout stages.
On Thursday, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet announced that Tumbalong Park at Darling Harbor would be the city’s live site, with public transport to be free from 4am to 12pm citywide on Sunday.
Brisbane fans also won’t miss out on seeing the game live on the big screen, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announcing on Friday King George Square and Queens Street Mall will be screening the game from. 4.30am on Sunday.
