WEST LAFAYETTE − After the high school golf season concluded last fall, Megan Honn put down the golf clubs.
The 2023 Lafayette Jeff graduate turned her focus to performing in show choir.
As soon as that’s over, Honn again turns her attention to spring golf tournaments.
Honn wanted to capture one last tournament though before she heads to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she’ll continue her golf career.
With an 83 at Coyote Crossing on Sunday, coupled with Saturday’s 78 at Battle Ground Golf Club, Honn captured the Women’s City championship, edging former Lafayette Jeff and IPFW standout Abigail Carlsen by three strokes.
“I was just excited to be able to play with Abbie the first day,” Honn said. “I wasn’t really expecting anything, but, just come out and play my game and see what happens.”
Five-time defending Women’s City champion Ally Ross did not enter the 2023 tournament, nor did her main competition during that run in Megan Donahue.
That opened the door for a new champion and after Saturday’s first round, Carlsen, Honn and Courtney Walter separated themselves from the field.
Carlsen carried a four-stroke lead into the second day after shooting 74 at Battle Ground, but struggled at Coyote Crossing Sunday with a 90.
“This is an underrated course,” 2015 Lafayette Jeff graduate Carlsen said of the par-73 Coyote Crossing. “Being Jeff alums, we never played out here so we don’t get to see it a lot. You’ve got to hit good shots and you’re not exactly rewarded with bad shots.”
He shot a two-day total of 161, just ahead of Carlsen’s 164 and Walter’s 168.
Tina Anderson won the first flight and Suzanne Zurn-Birkhimer won the second flight.
Despite owning a four-stroke lead entering Sunday, Carlsen was keenly aware of Honn’s ability to make up that deficit, having watched Honn succeed with the Bronchos while Carlsen was helping out McCutcheon’s golf program.
“It’s great to see her rewarded for the work she’s put in,” Carlsen said. “Working with McCutcheon, I’ve seen her play the past couple years. It’s good to see her take one home.”
Fresh out of high school, Honn is now a Women’s City champion already setting her sights on coming back and doing it again.
“Yeah, we’ll definitely try to (defend the title next summer),” Honn said.
