Marlins’ Pablo Lopez trade could jumpstart MLB’s hot stove

The Miami Marlins feature a wealth of young starting pitching and a lack of offense. As a result, one of their better pitchers is reportedly on the trade block, by Jon Heyman. Heyman reports that Miami almost traded Pablo Lopez to the New York Yankees ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. Lopez is reportedly available once again this offseason.

Lopez, a 26-year old right-hander, pitched to the tune of a 3.75 ERA last season. He was one of the best arms in baseball to open the 2022 campaign before hitting a roadblock as the season progressed. Nevertheless, he’s someone who would undeniably benefit most rotations in baseball.

In addition to impressive pitching prowess, Pablo Lopez demonstrated strong durability. He tallied 180 innings on the mound in 32 games pitched for the Marlins. Although those aren’t quite Sandy Alcantara numbers, Lopez gave the Marlins length in the rotation.

Could the Yankees be linked to Lopez once again in trade discussions?

The reason a deal did not come to fruition last season was because Miami’s asking price for Pablo Lopez was too steep for the Yankees’ liking. But New York may be willing to throw in additional assets after falling short in the 2022 MLB playoffs. Brian Cashman understands that Yankees fans are hungry for a World Series ring. But New York’s main focus for now is attempting to re-sign Aaron Judge.

Pablo Lopez will draw interest from many teams on the trade market. For some suitors, he could become a number 1-2 option in the rotation. For others, he would profile as an excellent middle of the rotation arm.

We will continue to provide Pablo Lopez updates as they are made available.
