Louie DeBrusk knows he’s in a fortunate position these days.
Not only is the former NHL player a television analyst for the Edmonton Oilers, his son, Jake, is a forward for the Boston Bruins.
“I’m not complaining, that’s for sure,” DeBrusk said on this week’s episode of the “NHL @TheRink” podcast. “I get to cover the best player in the game, and I’ve got a kid on the best team in hockey right now.”
With the Oilers, the 51-year-old gets to watch the Edmonton forward Connor McDavid work his magic on a nightly basis. McDavid has 88 points (40 goals, 48 assists) in 48 games entering Edmonton’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday (9:30 pm ET; TNT, SN360, SNW, TVAS) and is on pace for 68 goals and 150 points. numbers the League hasn’t seen since the mid-1990s.
DeBrusk told co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke that he and broadcast partner Jack Michaels make it a point to talk about what they’re seeing from McDavid. Leon Draisaitl and other Oilers so they don’t lose sight of what it means for hockey fans.
“We have to make sure we’re not undermining things that are happening on the ice because we’ve seen it so much,” DeBrusk said. “I mean, we’ve seen all these great highlight-reel goals from a number of players, but, in particular Connor and Leon, the way they’re leading the charge here for this team. It’s kind of a nightly thing. But we’ve gotten to a point now that we’re like, ‘Yeah, we need to talk about this.’ We’re not going to just stop talking about this because it’s happening all the time.”
And when he’s not with the Oilers, DeBrusk is keeping up with the Bruins and his son, who is currently injured.
Boston (38-5-4) became the fastest team to reach 80 points in a single season with a 4-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, getting there in 47 games.
“I didn’t see it coming for the Bruins, I’m not going to lie,” DeBrusk said.
In addition to talking with DeBrusk about the Oilers and Bruins, Rosen and Roarke touched on a number of different topics, including the New Jersey Devils and if they should look to acquire forwards. Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks before the NHL Trade Deadline on March 3, if Bruins coach Jim Montgomery should be Jack Adams Award favorite for coach of the year, and what the lineups could look like for each division in the 2023 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Feb. 4.
