Local players make NFL debuts

Former East Coweta Indian Jeremiah Gemmel is with the San Francisco 49ers, and former Northgate star James Skalski is with the Indianapolis Colts.

Two former Coweta County high school football players made their NFL debuts last weekend in the preseason.

Former East Coweta Indian Jeremiah Gemmel is with the San Francisco 49ers, and former Northgate star James Skalski is with the Indianapolis Colts.

Both players are linebackers on defense.

Last Friday, Gemmel and the 49ers played the Green Bay Packers in both teams’ first NFL preseason game. He got into the game and played 20 plays, 17 on defense and three on special teams. In the week leading up to the game, Gemmel had an interception in practice against 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.

Up next for Gemmel and the 49ers is preseason game two against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday night.

Skalski and the Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills 27-24 in their preseason opener last Saturday. He finished with two tackles and earned a defensive grade of 73.7.

Coincidentally, Skalski is joined on the Indianapolis roster by another former Northgate football player, Brandon Facyson.

The next opportunity for Skalski to get more game experience will be on Saturday afternoon against the Detroit Lions.

NFL rosters currently have a limit of 85 players during the preseason, but that number drops to 53 before the start of the regular season. Each team can also add 16 additional players to their practice squad.
