LIV Golf becomes first league to announce golfers can wear shorts in tournaments as fans await PGA response

LIV Golf has become the first golf league and competition to allow men to wear shorts in their latest publicity gimmick.

Golf tournaments currently allow men to wear shorts in practice rounds and pro-ams, while women golfers and caddies are allowed to wear them during competitive games.

However, men do not have permission, as per the dress code that was put in place by the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA).

Now, though, LIV Golf has announced shorts will be allowed in their tournaments, adding to the LIV vs. PGA rivalry and the former’s attempt to recruit more golfers.

LIV Golf’s CEO, Greg Norman, tweeted the decision on Saturday ahead of his competition’s second round.

Partnered with The Royal Teens song ‘Short shorts’, Norman posted a video of him swapping trousers for shorts on the golf course with the caption: ‘SHORTS OFFICIALLY ALLOWED’.

“It’s official,” Norman says in the clip, “As of tomorrow [Sunday]LIV Tour players will be able to wear shorts.

“The first league, and tour, to make it official.”

Following the change in rules, 19 of the 48 players playing opted to go bare-legged in LIV Golf’s tournament near Boston on Saturday.

While on the surface a debate over shorts seems menial, it’s been discussed for years within the sport, with many questioning the practicality of wearing trousers at sweaty summer venues.
