The night of the draft, Detroit had two start-worthy RBs on the roster, David Montgomery and D’Andre Swift, so it didn’t exactly seem like a positional need. The Lions ultimately traded Swift by the end of the weekend.
The Lions ended their 2022 campaign winning eight of the final 10 games and narrowly missing the playoffs, but it served as a sign that they are heading in the right direction. Gibbs is the exact type of playmaker head coach Dan Campbell needs in his offense to add another dimension to their game plan. Gibbs was the Tide’s leading receiver in 2022, and Campbell was a huge fan of that aspect of his game and even compared him to five-time Pro Bowler, Alvin Kamara, on the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast
Before joining the Lions, Campbell worked as the assistant head coach for the Saints and was a part of the coaching staff that drafted and developed Kamara so it is certainly fair to trust his judgment. Gibbs will certainly be in contention for the NFL Rookie of the Year as he will be looking at probably around 200 touches across the running and passing games.
Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor Jahmyr Gibbs and his role with the Detroit Lions.
