Linesman Joe Mahon Making NHL Debut in San Jose

The NHL’s newest linesman is set to get his first start.

Linesman Joe Mahon will be making his NHL debut on Tuesday at the SAP Center in San Jose as the Sharks host the Anaheim Ducks.

The Calgary native will take the ice alongside fellow linesman Trent Knorr and referees Gord Dwyer and Garrett Rank.

Mahon will wear #89, most recently sported by retired linesman Steve Miller.

From the NHLOA:

A Calgary native, Mahon spent his youth playing hockey in the Calgary Northstars AAA organization. Mahon then played 4 years of Junior hockey spending 2 years in the AJHL (Alberta Junior Hockey League) for the Calgary Junior A Mustangs and 2 seasons in the WHL for the Portland Winterhawks and Calgary Hitmen, helping Portland capture the WHL Championship in 2013 and earn in their spot in the finals of the Memorial Cup.

After wrapping up his playing career in the WHL, Mahon took a few years away from hockey and returned to Portland and built a successful business as a custom home builder. Mahon’s passion for the game continued and seeing another opportunity to remain involved, his officiating career took off. He worked his first season of officiating in the WSHL (Western States Hockey League) and BCHL where he was selected to work in the BCHL Playoffs. Mahon’s career accelerated quickly and the following season was offered to work in the WHL as a Linesman.

In the summer of 2021, Mahon was selected to attend the annual NHL Officiating Exposure Combine in Buffalo, NY where his strong showing as a linesman earned him the opportunity to work in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the 2021-2022 season. Mahon was selected to work in the 2022 WHL Championship series and the AHL Conference Finals.

Mahon remains active in the hockey community in Portland where he resides with his family.

Following the 2021-2022 Season, Mahon was offered a Minor League Linesman contract with the NHL.

Congratulations to linesman Joe Mahon on making it to the show in stripes!
