Division 2 League Cup Final:

Abbeyfeale Utd B (1) 4: (Jack Quinlivan 2 pens, Oran Quigley pen, Paudie Shanahan)

Mountcollins (0) 0

ABBEYFEALE Utd B captured the first silverware of the season with a much deserved four nil win over neighbors Mountcollins last Friday night at Mick Hankey Park, Clounreask.

We often hear of teams winning on penalties and to a certain extent this was again the scenario, the only difference on this occasion was the fact that Abbeyfeale scored three penalties during normal time which Mountcollins found hard to come back against.

Abbeyfeale led one nil at half time when Jack Quinlivan scored from the penalty spot after a handball by a Mountcollins defender.

The Fealesiders increased their lead early in the second half with Quinlivan again converting from the spot after another handball and a hat-trick of Abbeyfeale penalties was completed when Oran Quigley fired home from the spot after a foul on Dylan Murphy.

Sub Paudie Shanahan rounded off the win with the only goal of the game from open play.

After the game Abbeyfeale Utd B captain Paddy Hartnett was presented with the Division 2 League Cup trophy by league chairman Mike Pierce.

Division 1 League Cup Semi Final

Athea Utd (1) 5 (K Murphy 2, M Stack, M Horgan, D O’Shea)

Newcastle West Reserves (1) 5 (J Joyce 2, S Yamac, C Power, K O’Connell)

Athea Utd won 4-3 on penalties

Last night in Mick Hanley Park, Clounreask was a wild and crazy night with the ball hitting the net seventeen times, ten goals from open play and seven successful spot kicks.

League leaders Athea Utd came from a goal down to lead three times only to be pegged back by Newcastle West Reserves, their fourth goal forcing extra time and their fifth goal taking the tie to the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

The Reserves opened the scoring through Josh Joyce with Kevin Murphy leveling matters to leave it at one all at the break. Into the second half and Murphy put Athea ahead for the first time and ten minutes later Martin Stack made it three from a free kick.

Joyce with his second of the game narrowed the margin before sub Senol Yamac had the Reserves supporters cheering three minutes later with the equalizer. The craziness continued as two minutes later Mark Horgan had Athea back in front and it looked like Athea had done enough but Charlie Power had other ideas with another equalizer for the Reserves on eighty eight minutes.

We all love an impact sub and this was the case for Athea as within twenty seconds sub Daire O’Shea had the league leaders back in front. Surely that was that, but no. With virtually the last few seconds of extra time defender Kieran O’Connell sent the semi-final to penalties.

The nerves were gone at this stage but somehow Athea just got over the line after an epic contest. To quote Chris Kamara – “Unbelievable Jeff” Certainly the best fiver spent in many a night in Clownreask.

Athea will now meet Dromore Utd in the final and this is provisionally penciled in for Friday week, December 2nd in Clounreask at 7.30pm.

Needing to win a home to Newcastle West Town on Sunday morning to qualify for a league cup semi-final Broadford Utd did just that with a three nil win. Liam Shaughnessy had Broadford’s opener on thirteen minutes.

Micheál Brosnan dispossessed Jamie Keane twenty yards from his own goal before finding Alan Fitzpatrick, who played a first time pass on the half volley to Shaughnessy who duly found the net. four minutes later it was two nil when a Jack Pierce free kick wide on the right found Bryan Hannigan at the back post and he headed home to the keepers right.

Broadford wrapped up the win five minutes from time when Sean Brosnan played a through ball form halfway for Liam Shaughnessy to run on to and he made no mistake firing home from just inside the box. on and chances
