The ThinkBook 16p Gen 2 was a rather popular 16 inch laptop based on the AMD Ryzen 5000H series platform. It coupled those powerful chips with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, making it a gaming-ready multimedia device that still had a more subdued “business type” design.
So far, there has not been a ThinkBook 16p G3. But Lenovo has now quietly released a new ThinkBook laptop that sort of replaces it: The Lenovo ThinkBook 16p NX. This model has recently popped up on the PSREF product data base, and it seems to be North America or even US exclusive, as there are only three model numbers listed for the US market.
The ThinkBook 16p NX is a Lenovo laptop with a 16 inch screen, which always has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 (WQXGA/2.5K). Compared with the ThinkBook 16p G2, the display has a slightly lower brightness of 350 cd/m², but there is a new 120 Hz refresh rate option.
The screen is housed in a completely new chassis with a new drop down hinge design and a revised port setup; one of the USB C ports is replaced by HDMI. Instead of a 71 Wh battery, the ThinkBook 16p NX has a battery capacity of 75 Wh – while that would count as an improvement, there is now only one M.2 SSD slot instead of two, and the LPDDR5-RAM is completely soldered ( max 16 GB).
The most important innovation are the processors: Ryzen 6000H replaces Ryzen 5000H, with the eight core AMD Ryzen 7 6800H being the top of the line option offered. While that is no downgrade, the GPU is certainly not upgraded, as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 (75 W TDP) is replaced with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti (65 W TDP).
The Lenovo ThinkBook 16p NX is not yet available for purchase, but with it being listed in the PSREF, it will probably not take long until that changes.
I was an ardent reader of Notebookcheck’s laptop reviews even back in school. After writing reviews as a hobby, I then joined Notebookcheck in 2016 and have worked on device reviews and news articles ever since. My personal interest lies more with laptops than smartphones, with business laptops being the most interesting category for me. Technology should make our lives and work easier and good laptops are an essential tool for that to happen. This is why laptop reviews are not just my work but are also my passion.
