In the game of basketball, no lead is safe, no matter how big the lead may be. This is especially true in the NBA, where the best players in the world play.
The NBA playoffs are where the game’s level of play rises, and every game, every possession matters even more. So, you’d think a team, especially a championship-winning team, wouldn’t blow a big lead, right?
Clippers Come Back From 31 Points Down
The Golden State Warriors entered the 2019 NBA playoffs as back-to-back champions. The Los Angeles Clippers, on the other hand, have been around for 52 years, and they’ve never won a title.
So, when the Clippers faced off against the Warriors in the 2019 First Round, nobody gave the former a shot at winning the series. This was proven more to be true after the Warriors easily defeated the Clippers 121-104 in Game 1.
Then, Game 2 occurred. The Warriors jumped all over the Clippers, taking a 73-50 lead by halftime. This included scoring 40 points in the second quarter.
The Warriors extended their lead in the third quarter, as their lead at one point was 94-63. Warriors fans were ecstatic, as the game was all but over, and their team was about to go up 2-0.
Then, the unthinkable happened. The Clippers stormed back into the game as their bench players, Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, led the charge.
The Clippers scored 44 points in the third quarter and 41 in the fourth quarter. The Warriors looked stunned. It appeared as if they were a JV team playing a varsity club.
Williams scored 17 points in the third quarter by himself, while Warriors star, Stephen Curry, was held scoreless. In the fourth, Williams scored 12 more points as Harrell led the charge, scoring 15 points.
The Clippers outscored the Warriors 72-37 in 19 and a half minutes to win 135-131. Nobody could believe it; the unthinkable had happened.
The Clippers’ 31-point comeback was and still is the largest comeback in NBA playoff history. Williams led the Clippers with 36 points and 11 assists. Harrell added 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Unfortunately, for Clippers fans, their team would go on to lose the series in six games. Still, to be able to watch their team make this historic comeback was a sight to see.
