LapPi 2.0: SB Components brings DIY laptop kit to Kickstarter packing Raspberry Pi 4 Model B

  • by

SB Components has finally brought the LapPi 2.0 to Kickstarter, having first teased the laptop kit in October. The LapPi 2.0 is based on the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, as its name suggests. However, SB Components claims that the single-board computer (SBC) could be swapped for another, such as those produced by ASUS or Radxa.

For reference, the LapPi 2.0 measures 270 x 190 x 70 mm and weighs approximately 1.5 kg when assembled. According to SB Components, all backers will receive the following components with which to assemble the LapPi 2.0:

  • 13x 3 mm-thick acrylic panels
  • 1x 7-inch capacitive touchscreen LCD (1,024 x 600 pixels/5-point multitouch)
  • 2x HDMI connector
  • 1x HDMI flex cable
  • 2x Hinges
  • 1x Micro HDMI connector
  • 1x Micro USB power cable
  • 1x Pack of screws and standoffs
  • 1x Power adapter
  • 1x Protective case
  • 1x official Raspberry Pi 8 MP NoIR camera
  • 2x Speakers (8 Ω/5 W)
  • 1x USB Type-C Power cable
  • 1x UPS (without batteries)
  • 1x Wireless keyboard

The LapPi 2.0 has already reached its modest campaign goal. Currently, the DIY laptop is available from £199 as an unassembled kit without an SBC. SB Components also offers an assembled edition for £220, again with an SBC. Alternatively, the company sells the LapPi 2.0 with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (RPi 4) 2 GB and 8 GB RAM variants, which start at £259 and £299, respectively. SB Components includes an additional Micro HDMI connector and an SD card reader with RPi 4 bundles. Separately, the company sells two LapPi 2.0 editions with 4G HATs but without SBCs. All configurations should start shipping in March 2023.
