Lakeland resident Marc Dull cruises in the 106th Florida Amateur championship

Marc Dull of Lakeland posted the lowest winning score in the Florida Amateur in 67 years with his 17-under 271 at two Jupiter courses.

Marc Dull posted a historic score to complete a dominant week in the 106th Florida Amateur.

The 37-year-old, 6-foot-6 career amateur from Lakeland posted a final-round 70 at the Turtle Creek Club in Jupiter on Sunday and won by seven shots over University of North Florida junior Cooper Smith of Tampa (71) and incoming University of Florida freshman Jay Brooks of Boca Raton (69) at 17-under-par 271.

“This means a lot,” Dull told the Florida State Golf Association website. “This is the one I wanted and I’ve been close so many times.”

Dull, a past Florida Amateur and Mid-Amateur player of the year and a former Florida Southern player, had the lowest winning score in the tournament since Doug Sanders shot 270 in 1956 at the Tallahassee Municipal Golf Club. He also is the first Mid-Amateur (25 years or older) to win the Florida Amateur since Richard Maddox of Panama City in 2003 at Bay Hill.

Dull has won the FSGA Mid-Amateur and Mid-Amateur Stroke Play in 2018, among six statewide titles, but has come up short of the Florida Amateur until now. He lost in a playoff to Gabriel Lench in 2018 at The Concession in Bradenton.

Dull did not have a blemish on his card until a double-bogey 6 at the par-4 15th hole. It came in the middle of a run of birdies at Nos. 12, 14 and 16 and Smith and Brooks never applied enough pressure to make it matter,

Blanton Farmer (70) of Bradenton and Jonah Wasserstrom (74) of Hollywood tied for fourth at 9-under. Sam Nicholson of Atlantic Beach, a Providence graduate and a senior at the University of South Florida, didn’t make a birdie until the 15th hole and with a 75 fell into a tie for sixth at 6-under with Carson Enright of Longboat Key, who played college golf at Oregon State and the University of San Diego.
