Lady Topper Soccer Takes On Union In Home Opener

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Soccer hosts Union (Tenn.) on Saturday night for the Lady Toppers’ home opener at the WKU Soccer Complex. First kick is set for 7 pm and admission is free.

WKU Notes

  • The Lady Toppers fell to Xavier in the season opener, 1-0, on Thursday in Cincinnati. The Musketeers scored the eventual game-winner just before the halftime break.
  • WKU faced Austin Peay and Murray State in exhibition matches before the season officially started. The Lady Toppers finished in a 2-2 tie against Austin Peay. Newcomer Kendall King was the first to score in the game, netting a goal on an assist from Kate Erwin. Later, WKU benefited from an Austin Peay own goal. The Governors then went on to score two unanswered goals to even the score. The Lady Toppers and Murray State ended in a 0-0 tie, but WKU won 4-2 in penalty kicks.
  • WKU is 17-3-1 all-time in home openers.
  • The Lady Toppers were picked to finish second in Conference USA by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll. Three WKU student-athletes were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team Amber Barnett, Lyric Schmidt and Katie Erwin.
  • The Lady Toppers return all but three starters from the 2021 season, including United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team members Lyric Schmidt and Katie Erwin.
  • The Lady Toppers finished last season 10-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in league play, good for a second-place finish in the East division.
  • The 2022 slate includes 18 regular season matches, two exhibitions, 10 conference games and nine home matches.
  • Erwin was tied as WKU’s leading goal scorer in 2021 with four goals on the season and led the team in points with four assists.

Series History

  • WKU and Union (Tenn.) faced off for the first time in the program last season when the Lady Toppers notched a 3-0 win against the Bulldogs in Bowing Green.
  • Katie Erwin scored a goal and assisted on two other goals in the match, going for four points on the day. Briana Sayoc also scored in that match.

Union Notes

  • It will be the Bulldogs’ season opener.
  • Union took on Belmont on Thursday in an exhibition match in Nashville. The Bruins came out on top, 3-0.

Up Next

  • The Lady Toppers will travel to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt next Thursday at 7 pm and will stay in the Volunteer State to face Tennessee Tech on Sunday at 6 pm.
