Kraken shut out Bruins, handing them 1st home regulation loss

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins’ season-opening home point streak ended at 22 games with a 3-0 loss to the Seattle Kraken at TD Garden on Thursday.

Brandon Tanev, Eeli Tolvanen and Jaden Schwartz scored, and Martin Jones made 27 saves for Seattle (25-12-4), which has won seven straight games.

“I thought we did a really, really good job,” Jones said. “We blocked shots, we picked up sticks, we cleared pucks out. That was probably the biggest thing; we were really, really strong in front of our net tonight.”

Linus Ullmark made 28 saves for Boston (32-5-4), which was shut out for the first time this season and had a 14-game point streak end (11-0-3). The Bruins had been 19-0-3 at home. It was their first home loss in regulation in 29 games (26-0-3, including Stanley Cup Playoffs) since a 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on April 14 of last season.

“We weren’t a second late, we were two seconds late on everything,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said. “We just couldn’t see the plays that were there to be made all night. We’re not happy with how we played.”

The Bruins were coming off a three-game West Coast road trip when they outscored the opposition 16-5 and went 3-0-0.

“I think it just took us a while to get to our game, if it even got there,” the Boston defenseman said Charlie McAvoy said. “They came in and played well, but we just didn’t do enough for 60 minutes.”

The Kraken have won the first six of a seven-game trip that ends against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. They became the seventh team in NHL history to win each of its first six or more games of a road trip. The last one to do so was the San Jose Sharks from Nov. 13-22, 2015.

Seattle is 15-4-2 on the road.

“It’s been fun,” Kraken forward Jordan Eberle said. “This has been a long road trip; it’s made it a lot easier when we’ve swept it so far. We’re a close-knit group, we have fun together, we win together, and I don’t think there’s really Anyone in that locker room that really cares about the acknowledgment. It’s just a team mentality.”

Tanev gave Seattle a 1-0 lead at 7:14 of the first period, scoring on a tip-in from a sharp angle. Daniel Sprong shot from the right boards.

“I was hoping for the best,” Tanev said. “I know [Sprong is] a great shooter, so you can just park yourself in front of the net and hopefully you can deflect one in, and I was fortunate enough for that to happen.”

Tolvanen made it 2-0 at 19:21 of the second period with a wrist shot from the slot, shooting the puck under the crossbar.

“I don’t think so [Seattle] surprised us,” Ullmark said. “They’re a good team, we know their record on the road as well, and their game speaks for itself. I thought it was a good hockey game. It’s a game of inches. Sometimes you have them, sometimes you don’t.”

Schwartz scored an empty-net goal at 18:10 of the third period for the 3-0 final.

“It’s a tough place to win, obviously,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “You haven’t always been able to do that here this year, so for our guys, we should be proud of that. We did all the little things that you have to do to win: scored a couple timely goals, had some really good goaltending.”

NOTES: Jones has back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Oct. 10-13, 2015, with the Sharks, and became the first Seattle goalie to do it. He made 21 saves in a 4-0 win at the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. … The Kraken have their second seven-game winning streak of the season (Nov. 17-Dec. 1.). They are one of two expansion teams in NHL history with such a streak in their first two seasons. The Vegas Golden Knights had an eight-game streak in 2017-18 and a seven-game streak in 2018-19. … Bruins forward Joona Koppanen had one shot on goal and two hits, and was 5-for-7 on face-offs in 8:50 of ice time in his NHL debut.
