TAMPA — Evander Kane had to leave the ice after the Edmonton Oilers forward sustained a deep cut on his left wrist in the second period of a 3-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Tuesday.
The Oilers announced that Kane is stable and has been transported to the hospital to have a procedure.
“I’m just happy that he’s OK,” the Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. “Obviously, it’s a scary situation. I don’t want to comment too much on it, but it’s a scary situation.”
Kane fell to the ice after a collision with the Lightning defenseman Philippe Myersand Tampa Bay forward Pat Maroon accidentally skated over his wrist. Kane quickly grabbed his wrist and applied pressure to the cut.
“I hope he’s OK. When you look down and you see that much blood, you know there’s something wrong,” Maroon said. “Obviously, the boys are really worried about him. It’s a scary situation. You never wish that upon any player in the League.”
Kane went to the bench and eventually the locker room to be treated by medical staff. The game was stopped immediately for several minutes.
“All of a sudden, he was rushing as fast as I’ve seen and his eyes were as wide as a person’s can be,” Oilers captain Connor McDavid said. “Obviously, we got the sense of how alarming it was and how scared he was and we’re all scared for him. It’s obviously a situation that you don’t want to see.”
Kane has 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 13 games this season. He signed a four-year, $20.5 million contract on July 13.
“Everyone on our team and within our organization and most people in Edmonton are thinking about Evander Kane,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “When an accident like that happens on the ice, that’s where our first thought is. Shout out to the great medical staff we have in our organization and people here at the arena who were quick to respond.”
