A MUM has been left hurt and angry after Judy Murray criticized her transgender daughter who is competing in a women’s professional golf competition.
Hailey Davidson, 29, is currently participating in the LPGA and Epson Tour Qualifying School in Palm Springs, America, after transitioning last year.
She is the first transgender woman to have earned a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour card.
But the decision to allow Hailey, from Star, Ayrshire, to compete with other female golfers has divided the sports community.
Different sports stars and fans have taken to social media to debate the situation.
And the tennis coach waded in on Saturday to say that the decision is “not fair” and “wrong”.
Posting on Twitter, Murray, 62, said: “No. Not fair at all.
“Protect women’s sport. Listen to the facts, the scientists and the medics.
“This is wrong.”
Hailey’s mum Sandra Davidson told the Daily Record that Murray “has no right” to offer her opinion on the matter.
Sandra, who lives in her home with Hailey in Florida, took a dig at Murray as she said: “You do not know my daughter Hailey and most importantly you know absolutely nothing about transgender men or women.
“And therefore have no rights whatsoever to give your opinion on something you know nothing about.”
She added: “This woman does not know what she is talking about and should stick to commenting on tennis.”
Sandra also told the Daily Record that Hailey has received death threats after it became known that she was entering the competition.
Hailey was able to compete in events in the National Women’s Golf Association after the United States Golf Association and the Ladies Professional Golf Association amended the rules.
The eligibility rule change now means that it is easier for transgender athletes to compete.
