The final season of Big 8 conference golf for Jonesville High School reached its conclusion on Tuesday, May 23. The Comets played their final season of Big 8 golf before they move on to the Cascades Conference next spring. The Comets were able to end their time in the Big 8 by taking first place at the conference championship held in Concord. This is their second Big 8 championship in a row. The Comets finished the match with a final score of 351.
The Quincy Orioles came in second place with a final score of 359. Union City took third place. Homer took fourth place. Senior Sam Sawyer took first place and won the individual Big 8 title for Quincy. Teammate and senior Dave Milliman took second place. Sawyer had a final score of 78 and Milliman had a final score of 80.
The Comets were led by junior Zachary Mains, who finished the day in third place and had a final score of 83. Junior Carter Baker took fourth place with a final score of 86. Senior Carter Lucas tied for fifth place and had a final score of 89. Jonesville senior Brennen Mains had a final score of 93 to take 10th overall. Comet senior Braden Stiverson had a final score of 103. Senior Collin Laney had a final score of 115.
Highlights for Mains included a total of three birdies. He birdied two holes on the back nine and hole one of the front nine. He also had four pairs in total. Baker had nine pars over 18 holes. Carter Lucas had five pars in total. Brennen Mains had two pars on the day. Stiverson had a par on hole seven. Laney had a par on hole three.
The Comets now enter the postseason with momentum behind them, as this senior class has the distinct honor of winning the conference championship in the final year of their participation in the Big 8. The team will also be heading back to a familiar course for their regional final assignment. The Comets head back to the Medalist Golf Course in Marshall, Michigan. The team recently played for the John Matthew Krutsch Invitational. The Comets will look to improve upon their last outing at the course. They will start their round of golf on Wednesday, May 31 in the D3 LP Regional 13 finals. Hillsdale will also be participating.
