THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech swimming and diving teams concluded a successful day of competition with victories over Queens and West Florida. The women defeated Queens, 191-103, and West Florida, 234-66. The men beat Queens with a final score of 149-112.
Both the men and women earned top three performances in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
In the men’s 200 medley relay, Tech placed second with a time of 1:26.28 and third with a time of 1:28.10. The men also finished second and third in the 200 free relay with times of 1:19.56 and 1:21.02.
On the women’s side, the Jackets took home second (1:40.54) and third (1:42.80) in the 200 medley relay. Tech earned the same placements in the women’s 200 free relay with a second-place time of 1:33.19 and third-place time of 1:35.90).
The Jackets also experienced success in the women’s diving events. Katie McKyton won the 1 meter (300.45) while Anna Bradescu placed third (295.20) and Carmen Woodruff finished third (276.75). In the 3-meter event, Bradescu was the champion (297.68) and Woodruff took home second (285). All these top scores achieved by the Jackets meet NCAA Zone Diving qualifications.
Tech swept both the men’s 1650 and 500 free. Mert Kilavuz (14:53.61) won the 1650 free, Charles Perks placed second (15:32.15) and Sean Santos finished third (15:36.56). Batur Ünlü championed the 500 free (4:17.17), Kilavuz came in second (4:19.90) and Perks secured the sweep with third place (4:29.78).
Deniz Ertan won both the women’s 1650 free (16:11.69) and 500 free. Her teammate, Allison Brownjoined her with third-place times of 16:53.72 and 4:58.25 in the events.
In the 200 free, Ünlü (1:35.61) and Rei Kuramoto (1:47.10) had first-place finishes. Ben Gerhard came in third (1:38.54) for the men and Zora Ripkova placed second for the women (1:49.80).
In the women’s 50 and 100 free events, Anna Hadjiloizou placed second (22.69, NCAA B Cut/50.32) and Kiah Smith finished third (23.48/51.43). David Gapinski came in second (20.22) and Daniel Kertesz (20.31) in the men’s 50 free. In the men’s 100 free, Ünlü took home second (43.70) and Will Coady finished third (45.14).
Berke Saka was victorious in both of the men’s backstroke events, swimming a time of 46.15 in the 100 back and a time of 1:41.57 in the 200 back. On the women’s side, Astrid Dirkzwager placed second in the women’s 100 back (56.63) and 200 back (2:01.22).
Tech dominated the women’s 200 fly with McKenzie Campbell in first (1:58.04), Lindsey Merk in second (2:00.09) and Abby Cohen in third (2:01.51). The women also had Ripkova win the 100 fly (54.07) and Merk placed second with a time of 54.29. Antonio Romero took home second (1:46.56) in the men’s 200 fly and Hunter Foehner finished third (49.25) in the 100 fly.
Claudia Butterfield won the women’s 100 breast (1:01.65) and placed second in the 200 breast (2:15.70). In the same events, Clarissa Sabin finished third (1:02.58/2:17.87). On the men’s side, Daniel Kertesz was also a champion in the 100 breast (54.77) and João Caballero placed third in the 200 breast (2:01.58).
In the 400 IM, Campbell (4:16.67) won for the women with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time and Nils Bognar won for the men (3:54.38). The women swept the event with Kuramoto in second (4:21.57) and Cohen in third (4:23.43). Jack Mezzogori also finished in the top of the men’s 400 IM with a third-place time of 4:00.31.

Tech swimming’s next competition will be against Carson Newman at 3 pm on Friday, Jan. 27 at McAuley Aquatic Center. The divers are set to host Miami, Florida State and Auburn for two days of competition on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28.
