ASCCA is the Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association, in operation for nearly 25 years as a non-profit charity that is the peak body for seniors’ technology clubs across Australia, and a voice connecting industry, government and seniors.
With the pandemic having forced more seniors that ever into using smartphones simply so they could check-in with QR codes and be part of the modern world, the needs of seniors 20 years ago learning about the mouse, dial-up internet, browsers, double clicking and more has changed dramatically.
While those changes have made some things easier, some things have become harder. No longer are we just dealing with desktops and laptops running Windows, macOS or Linux (for the more adventurous types), but there’s now so many more platforms.
Smartphones, tablets, Chromebooks, voice dictation, voice commands, smart speakers with and without screens, smart TVs, home automation, VR headsets, CarPlay, Android Auto and more are used every day by billions of people.
So, how do you stay safe online in 2022? How can you become street smart and avoid all the scams? What happens if your identity gets stolen, what do you do? What is this thing called the Metaverse? What are some of the ways technology makes life easier? How can you have fun with technology?
These topics and many more are part of this year’s conference theme of “Making digital life safe and fun!”.

Barry has been a member of the club since 2008, filled several positions on the committee over the years, and has been the President since 2021.
He has had a long interest in computing applications and a background in teaching adults and children, as well as having been a community volunteer in service clubs, scouting and other organizations for 50+ years.
Barry maintains a positive and enthusiastic attitude and encourages others to be likewise, and not be frightened of change but to look for the opportunities and embrace them.

Eti and Mary will provide an overview of what scams are affecting Australians (particularly older Australians) the most in 2022, how they work, and what you can do to protect yourself.
