iPhones have been using Sony camera sensors for over a decade, confirms Apple CEO Tim Cook.
iPhones have some of the best cameras on any mobile phone and this has been the norm for years now. Be it for still photography or videography, iPhones of every year excel as an overall camera package. Apple, however, has kept from revealing the details about its internal components, unlike its Android rivals. We often got to know some of the details from analysts and tipsters obtaining the information from Apple’s suppliers. Apple CEO Tim Cook, however, has now openly hinted at who makes the camera sensors on the iPhones. Psst, it is the best one in the industry.
In his latest tweet, Cook shares a photo of him taking a look at Sony’s CMOS testing facility. “We’ve been partnering with Sony for over a decade to create the world’s leading camera sensors for the iPhone. Thanks to Ken and everyone on the team for showing me around the cutting-edge facility in Kumamoto today,” he wrote.

The Sony image sensors are considered to be some of the best in the industry and are widely sought after by smartphone manufacturers. Instead of gunning for the highest megapixel count like Samsung. Sony focuses on image quality.

This year, we saw Apple leaving behind its 12MP camera sensor for a higher resolution and much larger Sony sensor. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max use this 48MP sensor and in the real world, it has shown results. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 15 Ultra is also expected to use a dedicated periscope lens setup for its telephoto camera.
