All of the leaks surrounding Intel’s upcoming Raptor Lake laptop processors concluded that the Core i9-13900HX will be the flagship SKU. The chip even showed up on Geekbench and bested the current performance champion (Core i9-12950HX) in single and multi-threaded workloads. However, Intel has yet another high-end Raptor Lake laptop CPU in the pipeline called the Core i9-13980HX.
Wccftech has learned from its sources that the Intel Core i9-13980HX will pack 8 Raptor Cove performance and 16 Gracemont efficiency cores, the same as the desktop Core i9-13900K. It can boost up to 5.6 GHz, one of the highest clocks in a laptop CPU so far and 200 MHz above the Core i9-13900HX’s rumored boost clock. The “HX” moniker confirms it will have a TDP of 55W, although that figure could go much higher under load. Other specs include 36 MB of L3 cache.
Unfortunately, there is no word about when the Core i9-13980HX will see the light of day. It will almost certainly be unveiled as a mid-cycle refresh SKU sometime in 2023. Intel’s CES 2023 event is rumored to focus more on the Raptor Lake “H” and lower-end “HX” SKUs. OEMs like Dell are already planning to resurrect 18-inch laptops, and the Core i9-13980HX would be one of the better chips to take advantage of such a chassis.
