Injured power couple Mitchell Starc and Alyssa Healy keep tradition alive with the annual ‘Stealy Cup’ golf match

Cricket’s golden couple Mitchell Starc and Alyssa Healy have defied injury to play off for ‘the Stealy Cup’ in their traditional New Year’s Eve golf tournament.

Healy proudly announced she won the one-on-one event between the keen golfers and Cricket World Cup-winning husband and wife pairing.

Taking to Instagram stories, Healy said “Happy New Year Everyone!” and thanked her husband for the contest as she held the Stealy Cup.

The following story was a picture of Starc captioned: “He remains positive for 2023.”

The pair previously told Channel 7 the tradition began when, over a beer at the clubhouse after a round of golf, they devised a points system to put in place for the one-on-one match-up.

“Then we ended up taking the mickey further and buying a trophy,” Starc said in 2018.

Healy joked: “I’m the current holder, it got presented last year on New Year’s Eve on the couch at home, it was a pretty special ceremony.”

“I think I’m actually a worse loser than Mitch so it’s probably better that I’m winning,” she added.

“We do have a rule that you have to have a smooch after the 18th hole no matter what happens on those 18 holes. We have a smooch and go and have a beer.”

Both the cricketers are currently dealing with injuries, with Starc suffering a ‘messy’ finger injury in the Boxing Day Test.

The paceman sent down 18 overs in South Africa’s second innings despite dealing with a fracture and detached tendon in the middle finger on his bowling hand suffered on day one.

The 32-year-old was due to undergo follow-up scans and meet with a finger specialist to determine the next steps and, crucially, his timeframes for recovery.

“From the scans the other day the tendon’s basically gone from the top of the finger,” he said.

“So I can’t straighten it or any of that.”

Healy has some concerns of her own after a right calf injury ruled her out of the fifth and final T20I against India in Mumbai last month.
