In reversal, agent says soccer player Christian Atsu ‘yet to be found’ after Turkey earthquake

Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu is still missing after a powerful earthquake hit Turkey and parts of Syria earlier this week after his agent told news media that Atsu had been pulled from the rubble and was safe and stable.

The earthquake’s death toll was over 19,300 people as of Thursday morning.

“I am currently in Istanbul. The situation remains the same, Christian Atsu is yet to be found. Unless I see Christian, or speak with him, I have no further updates,” Nana Sechere said on social media.

“Following yesterday’s update from the club that Christian had been pulled out alive, we are yet to confirm Christian’s whereabouts. As you can imagine, this continues to be a devastating time for his family and we are doing everything we can to locate Christian.”

That contradicts previous reports that Atsu had been recused on Monday and taken to a hospital to be treated.

The Associated Press reported that Aydin Toksoz, the deputy head of Hatayspor soccer club, told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency, that the team’s sporting director Taner Savut was also missing.

“We have not been able to reach Atsu or Taner Savut,” Toksoz told the Anadolu Agency.

Atsu, 31, was part of Ghana’s World Cup squad in 2014 and previously played in England, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia before signing with Hatayspor in September.
