Ian Rapoport expects the Joe Burrow contract extension soon — but maybe not first

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has made it clear his contract extension talks are underway and that he knows what he wants, while keeping in mind the team’s ability to keep players like Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says Burrow’s deal may not be the first quarterback extension this summer, but he expects it soon.

Reporting on Burrow’s comments earlier this week about a contract extension, Rapoport said he indeed expects the talks to remain a very private matter between the two sides.

“You look at the landscape of this thing,” Rapoport said. “Lamar Jackson got done. Jalen Hurts got done, $51 and then $52 million per year. I would not be surprised if Joe Burrow eclipses that…Justin Herbert’s talks are underway, would not be surprised if he ended up going first, then Joe Burrow.”

While Burrow’s comments have fueled expectations that he might take a team-friendly deal, keep in mind that might mean the structure of the payouts, not the overall cash number.

This summer, it’s safe for Bengals fans to expect Burrow to become one of the league’s highest-paid players, with another deal getting done before he likely has little impact.
