CHICAGO — Hurricane Ian is likely to cause some changes to the Phillies’ schedule during their very important upcoming four-game series in Washington.
The Phils and Nationals are scheduled to play a single game Friday night, a day-night doubleheader on Saturday and a single game Sunday afternoon.
With rain in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, the Phillies, Nationals and Major League Baseball were discussing playing a day-night doubleheader on Friday and single games on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. If Saturday’s game could not be played, the teams would play another doubleheader on Sunday. This is the plan being discussed but nothing is firm other than the fact that the series will not be moved, according to Phillies manager Rob Thomson.
“I think we’ll know more at some point tonight,” Thomson said before Wednesday night’s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Phillies entered that contest leading Milwaukee by 1½ games for the final NL wild-card playoff spot with nine games to play.
Doubleheaders are always a test for a team’s pitching staff. Bailey Falter, Kyle Gibson and Noah Syndergaard would all be available to start in a potential doubleheader Friday.
The Phils are scheduled to play a three-game series to end the regular season Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Houston. Thursday is a scheduled off-day before the playoffs start but it’s conceivable that a makeup game could be played that day if it impacted the playoff race or postseason seeding.
