After reading computerbase for YEARS, I created an account today, after I lost my graphics card (Radeon 7870 GHz) in a gaming pc and my HTPC mainboard maybe 3 weeks before that.
I’m actually quite determined on this matter – thanks to ComputerBase – but I can’t make up my mind or I’m afraid to give a crap, so here’s a double question about HTPC mainboards and separate GPUs.
If necessary, I’ll break it down and post an addition in the GPU section.
Thanks for the opinion and input,
Greetings
[Bitte fülle den folgenden Fragebogen unbedingt vollständig aus, damit andere Nutzer dir effizient helfen können. Danke! ]
1. Do you want to play on PC?
- Exactly which game?
HTPC: Couch Co-op Stuff with Controllers under Linux (Stardew Valley) or Ancient under Wine (Rayman’s Raving Rabbits)
Gaming PCs: older stuff (C&C, Dungeons 2/3, Grim Dawn, Racedriver Grid, Old Need for Speed, Witcher 1+2, All MassEffect 1+2, Mirrors Edge (2) under Windows mainly due to lack of GPU), . . .) or newer small indie games (gris, hoa, er, hob, …). - which resolution?
Full HD is enough for both - Ultra/High/Medium/Low graphics settings?
It should be good 🙂 If things don’t go well now, the price will go down. - Is 30 FPS enough for you or should it be 60 or 144 FPS?
HTPC: Doesn’t matter much, I come from the Athlon 5350 and it was quite fast (except Stardew Valley’s split screen after the last update)
Gaming PC: At least 60 fps would be nice, but the screen isn’t sharper than 60.
2. Would you like to use the PC for image/music/video editing or CAD? As a hobby or are you a professional? Which software will you use?
HTPC: No, there’s nothing special in Audacity other than spoiling the audio track.
Gaming PC: Gimp, Inkscape, Handbrake, Audacity, sometimes Blender under Linux; Nothing in the direction under the windows. play there
3. Do you have special needs or desires (overclocking, a particularly quiet PC, RGB lighting, …)?
Both: It must be AMD.
I want to keep the case.
HTPC should be as energy efficient as possible (low TDP, Athlon 3000G anyone?)
On gaming PCs, I wanted to hit AMD’s 7000 series mid-range release next year, if there weren’t any moon prices. I thought I’d manage to switch from the 7870 to the next 7870. Well… so maybe a (used) transition card (RX6650/RX6600?)
4. How many and which monitors do you want to use? Number, model, resolution, refresh rate (Hz)? Is FreeSync (AMD) or G-Sync (Nvidia) supported? (with link to manufacturer or price comparison please!)
HTPC: 1 Monitor Neck E505, 50”, FullHD, 60Hz
Gaming PC: 1 Monitor, 24”, FullHD, IPS, 60Hz
5. Do you still have an old PC, parts of which can be reused? (with links to specifications from the manufacturer or price comparison please!)
The HTPC’s mainboard is probably broken – it just goes out after a short time and the LAN LED is flickering. So CPU + Board + RAM should be exchanged.

The gaming PC’s graphics card is probably faulty – the GPU goes out under load after a brief display of a yellow bar pattern. So the GPU needs to be replaced.

Other Additional Hardware:
6. How much money are you willing to spend?
HTPC: ~350 for CPU, RAM, Board
Gaming PC: ~300 if this is enough for a while, or as little as possible, even fine if used.
7. When do you want to buy the PC? As soon as possible or can you wait a few weeks/months?
Will be happy soon with gaming pc
HTPC would also be nice if it’s up and running again by Christmas.
8. Do you want to assemble the PC yourself or assemble it (by shop or volunteer)?
There’s even the man – when it comes to PCs.
