The two teams played a pair of different games on Monday. The Tigers jumped out in front in the opening inning in game one, before the Guardians came back to tie the game, and went ahead with a three-run home run from Andres Gimenez in the seventh to send Cleveland to a 4-1 win. Aaron Civale had a great start for the Guardians, striking out 10 Tigers in six innings of work. Gimenez ended the afternoon going 3-4 at the plate.
The second game saw the Tigers offense come to life. Despite once again giving up an early lead, they tied the game at three in the fifth inning. In the following inning, Jonathan Schoop hit his ninth home run of the season to give Detroit the lead. Rookie Kerry Carpenter followed that up with his first big league homer to extend the lead. Although Cleveland tried to keep it close, two more runs in the eighth helped the Tigers snap their eight-game losing streak, coming away with a 7-5 win. Carpenter ended up going 3-4, scoring three times in the second game of the day.
With the split on Monday, the Tigers are now 4.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals in the race for last place in the American League Central. The Guardians’ lead at the top of the division remains similar to what it has been, as they are just two games ahead of the Minnesota Twins.
