A disappointing effort on Tuesday night brought the Detroit Red Wings back down to Earth, and will now try to get back on the winning track on Thursday night when they take on an Original Six rival in the red-hot Boston Bruins.

After an impressive start to the season, the Red Wings were finally handed their first regulation loss of the 2022-23 campaign on Tuesday night, in a rather lackluster performance against the New Jersey Devils. Despite captain Dylan Larkin opening the scoring in the opening minutes of the game, the Devils caught Detroit off guard by answering with four-straight goals. Although the Wings tried to come back in the third, it was too little, too late, as New Jersey took home a 6-2 win.
In a way, the loss might do more good than harm for the young roster, something head coach Derek Lalonde made that point when speaking to the media after the loss. In hindsight, the Red Wings have still been playing excellent hockey to start the season, and will have to bring that energy to a big test on Thursday.
The Bruins have had one of the league’s surprising starts, as some expected the aging team to take a step back, especially at the beginning of the season with star winger Brad Marchand still recovering from surgery. Yet, Boston has one of the best records in the NHL, coming in with a 6-1 record, and are winners in three-straight games after taking down the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The B’s have been strong at home in the early going as well, as they are 5-0 at TD Garden thus far.
Detroit did alright against Boston last season, as the two Atlantic Division rivals split the four-game season series, each picking up a win on the road as well.
