How Memphis 901 FC extended its franchise-best unbeaten streak against Detroit City FC

Just like the fireworks were firing away during the national anthem, the second matchup of the season between Memphis 901 FC and Detroit City FC was just as explosive even though it ended in a 0-0 draw.

A total of five yellow cards were called, as both teams fought tooth and nail for 90 minutes. In total, 901 FC had 20 shots on goal compared to seven from Detroit.

901 FC (6-2-4) extended its franchise-best unbeaten streak to 10 games with Saturday’s result, but manager Stephen Glass was left unsatisfied given the team’s strong performances leading into just its second home game over the past 35 days. It’s the first time this season 901 FC was held without a goal.

“We’re disappointed at our performance level tonight,” he said. “When good teams don’t perform at their top level, they don’t get beat.”

Memphis can credit the draw to a solid defensive backline.

Detroit (4-7-4) had various chances to score throughout the game, as they came out of the gates firing with five shots on goal by the end of the first half.

Although 901 FC goalkeeper Drew Romig was only credited with one save on the game, his defense came up huge as time and time again Detroit was thwarted by Romig diving on the ball.

Up next for Memphis 901 FC is a matchup versus FC Tulsa on Wednesday, June 21. Newcomer Rodrigo da Costa faces his former team for the first time in a Memphis uniform since getting traded back in May 26. It’s the second of three games in a seven-day stretch for the club.

“We will be more ready for (the game) because, like I said, the boys (are) coming off the back of what feels like a defeat and will not be happy,” Glass said.
