The NHL Power Rankings are a great way to gauge the perception of teams and how they stack up against all 32 teams in the league.
It’s obviously very early in the season, but let’s check on how the New York Rangers are doing versus the competition.
NHL Power Rankings
Over at our sister site The Daily Goal Horn, which covers the entire league, the Blueshirts ranked 8th for the month of October. That was a significant drop from their preseason ranking of number 2.

8. New York Rangers: The Rangers came out of the gate firing on all cylinders but stumbled during a 4-game stretch where they went 0-2-2. Their high flying offense was getting tons of chances but not converting. They turned the corner late with two consecutive wins, including giving Dallas their first home loss of the season. Artemi Panarin is tied for third in scoring with 16 points and last year’s Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin has yet to lose in regulation (5-0-2, 2.55 GAA, .913 SV%). You can expect the Rangers to stay in the top 10 all year.
Playoff Odds and Other Power Rankings
Per the website MoneyPuck, the New York Rangers chances of making the playoffs are 57.5%. They currently have a 3.2% chance of winning the Cup.
I wouldn’t make too much of this after just one month.

Dan Rosen, who covers the Rangers for NHL.com had the most accurate assessment of the Blueshirts play to date.
“The Rangers played well in a 3-2 shootout loss against the Avalanche on Tuesday but then lost their fourth in a row, 3-0 at the New York Islanders on Wednesday. Tuesday was their best game since a 3-1 opening-night win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which remains their most complete game of the season. They are working out some kinks, including sloppy play in the defensive zone, but performances like the one against the Avalanche show what kind of team they are capable of being. Losses to the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets forced me to drop the Rangers to No. 9 this week after ranking them No. 5 in my Super 16 last week. More games like they played against Colorado could push them back up.” — Rosen

Kristen Shilton also provided a fair take.
The Rangers turned in some surprising results of late with losses to both Columbus and San Jose. But below the surface, New York’s underlying numbers don’t suggest catastrophe — they’re a top-five possession team (and dominate the face-off circle), averaging fewer than 30 shots against per game and more than three goals per game.
