How bad will the Mets’ slide get?

Monday night’s New York Mets game was pretty familiar. The Mets took a lead, blew that lead and lost the game.

The Milwaukee Brewers hit a 2-run homer in the sixth inning and that stood up in a 2-1 win. That was the 11th time since June 2 the Mets have blown a lead and lost a game, according to MLB Network.

The Mets are eight games under .500. They’ve lost seven of their last nine and 16 of their last 21. They’re a staggering 16 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

The Mets will try to turn around their horrendous month of June on Tuesday night when they face the Brewers again. The Mets are a fairly healthy -150 favorite at BetMGM, which is surprising given how bad they have been.

It obviously wasn’t supposed to be this way for the Mets this season. They spent big again and had the kind of roster that looked like it could make the playoffs and maybe even compete with the Braves for the NL East. That hasn’t happened.

The offense has been middle of the road. The pitching has been a problem, with a 4.62 ERA that ranks 25th in MLB. The starting pitching has not been as good as advertised and a bullpen that lost Edwin Diaz to a knee injury in a World Baseball Classic celebration has struggled. And as everything gets worse, the heat keeps turning up in a tough market.

In the betting world, the Mets have been awful. For a bettor putting $100 on the Mets’ moneyline in every game, he or she would be down $1,583 this season according to Covers.com. That’s tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the third-worst in MLB. Only the Oakland A’s and Kansas City Royals have lost bettors more money.

It seems unlikely to turn around completely this season. This isn’t the season any Mets fan expected.

Here is the first look at the sports betting slate for Tuesday:

Full MLB schedule

There are 15 MLB games on Tuesday, led off by the second game of a fun Cincinnati Reds-Baltimore Orioles series. The Reds have gotten a lot of attention lately but the Orioles took the first game of the series and are just four games back in the AL East. The Orioles have a fun, young lineup that is making moves already. Baltimore is a -145 favorite over the Reds on Tuesday.

Another interesting matchup is between the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rays and Diamondbacks are both in first place, and that’s a particular surprise for Arizona. The Diamondbacks have Cy Young contender Zac Gallen on the mound Tuesday and they’re -125 favorites.

Trio of WNBA games

For those needing a basketball fix, the WNBA’s regular season marches on. The New York Liberty are a 5.5-point favorite over the Connecticut Sun, the Minnesota Lynx is favored by 2.5 over the Seattle Storm and the Dallas Wings are a 3.5-point favorite over the Phoenix Mercury.

What’s the best bet?

The Houston Astros have been disappointing this season. But not as disappointing as the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals, back from a trip to London, are barely underdogs against the Astros. The Astros are a small -120 favorite and a pretty easy pick against a bad Cardinals team.
