AUSTIN – Holliday’s Makayla Smith had a difficult second round at the UIL Girls Class 3A State Golf Tournament on Tuesday at Jimmy Clay Golf Course, sending her tumbling in the overall standings.
Smith settled for a 14th-place finish after shooting a two-day total of 171. But she was sitting in eighth place, just two shots away from the medal stand, following a first-round effort of 81. She shot 90 in the second round.
Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill’s Katie Hart (74-72—146) won the tournament with Wall’s Shay West (73-76—149) and Peaster’s Payton Hull (79-74—153) placing second and third.
Wall won the team title with a 674.
MUNDAY’S RODRIGUEZ PLACES 9TH
KYLE – Brooklyn Rodriguez dropped from third to ninth after a difficult second round Thursday at the UIL Girls Class A State Golf Tournament at Plum Creek Golf Course.
Rodriguez had a two-day total of 180 but was tied for third after a first-round 87. She shot 93 in the second round, causing her to fall in the standings.
Happy’s Halee Jo Johnson (85-76—161) had a strong second round, earning the state title. Garden City’s Rylee Wood (89-84—173) defeated Blanket’s Karli Kinkade (85-88—173) in a playoff for second place.
In the team standings, Throckmorton (452-454—906) placed seventh. Garden City (374-356—730) won the gold medal by a comfortable 42 strokes over Veribest (390-382—772) with Clyde Eula (432-427—859) placing third.
The Throckmorton team members included Hannah Gage (100-100—200), Olivia Fauntleroy (111-115—226), Sydnee Koonsman (114-114—228) and Brylie Gage (127-125—252).
Crowell’s Hadley Henry (103-100—203) finished 22nd in the medalist standings.
